When our current boat sells I am keen to build a smaller boat with the 7.5inch two stage and V6 with a dead rise of 14deg on the hull, Question is ...Which V6???, The performance of the VQ35 is pretty cool, but I also like the Commodore V6 (pre alloytec).
    Any suggestions?? :-)

As long as its an alloy V6 ,as you want to keep the weight down

Alot of alloy motors are so cluttered with cams, belts and wires they probley weigh more than my 4.3 vortec. Compare a leyland with a lexus for instance.
Being a builder and not a mechanic i like the simplicity of my carbed v6 vortec .
Being a good allround basic engine if you used one infront of the scott youd have hundreds out there in front of 2stage hamiltons to compare the figures with.

Probably weight more is not much of an argument for alloy V cast engines , we need to get some weight figures and HP figures .

I am thinking maybe a VS/VT 3.8 and then make a custom intake to take a carb and touch up the heads and fit a cam. (something different)

So the search for a suitable motor begins 8O

not wanting to put a damper on things here but...........
umm ,how are you going to run the ignition if you do that?by the time you got a carby and an ignition box (msd?) and made a manifold etc it would end up costing a similar amount to using a pooter wouldnt it?also the xtra height of the engine would require a very high engine cover in comparison to an efi engine.maybe just use the oem computer which would give a better result than a carb setup even though its not optimised for marine use im thinking........
one problem with the later engines would be the security system in the computer that would need to be bypassed
    just my 2c

I have a cunning plan for the spark that should be cheap, It should work out way cheaper than a computer. I am doing it more to show the DIY guy how to go about it and save money on a build. Personally I prefer a computer but i am keen to show how it can be done without one, And as a project its much more fun
