We were at the wimac ramp running boats several times today, and a group of young hoons (not said in a bad way) were having fun on a jet ski that they had bought for $1200 (they were having a ball) we went up the river and coming back down one of the girls had swum out into the current in front of the ramp and looked like she was getting a bit tired as she was carried towards the bridge abutments so I asked if she was OK and she reluctantly said no, I swung around and told her to hop up on the rear jet cover and just thought she would jump on and we would give her a lift to shore. I was way wrong as she was absolutely buggered and couldn't even hold the boat, She yelled for help at that stage and Rodney yelled at me to spin around as she was going under. We got to her and pulled her on board but even though she was only small it was still not easy as she had no strength to help.
Her friends thought she was just getting a ride in a boat and had no idea she was in trouble.
We got her back to the ramp and put the boat on the trailer and I thought I would let them know how dangerous it was to swim near the up stream side of the bridge out in the current, and fully expected to be told where to get off...to my surprise they listened and said thanks, it was a good group of young guys and girls out having fun. And it was better them doing it at the ramp where we are going slow than in the middle of the river up stream where they could be hard to see.
We went for a run last thing tonight and it is now more important to watch for swimmers as the weather warms up as there were a few swimming in main channels. We need to be allot more aware on the rivers as the weather warms up
