We set up a boat with a VQ30 (Maxima) engine using the car computer, the aim was to set up a cost effective and reliable motor on a budget. We achieved that using the factory computer and the performance was more than satisfactory. The motor propelled the boat to 50mph at 5000rpm and had reasonable bottom end punch but ran out of grunt at the top end. In saying that we boated happily with 4 adult blokes that may have eaten one or two many pies in their time
The new owner of the boat wanted a bit more peformance and I suggested that a tunable computer would be a good start, I have fitted and tuned over 100 Microtech computers and rate them as a great system. Microtech don't do a computer for the VQ motors so the next thought was the new Link G4, Now Link have been trying to get me to sell the new computers for a couple of years and even invited me to their HQ to spend a half day on their dyno when they were developing the G4, and I liked what I saw.........I was never a fan of the older LEM Links. That said the new G4 looked like the best choice.
I went straight to the experts for some training on the setup of the G4, Tuning an engine with the correct sensors is relitively easy, the hard part is learning the tuning system and how it operates...
A few hrs with the experts and I had the basics sorted, next step was to tune on the water which was easy to get the engine to the parameters that I wanted to see.
With a bit of tuning by myself on the river we picked up 400rpm and quite a bit of punch, I still have some tuning to do and expect better results.
I am really happy with the G4 and its tune ability as it gives us another system for the late motors.
The pricing starts at around $1350+ for the base G4 that will run the Lexus or the VQ30.
There is still no competition when it comes to the LS range of engines as the factory computer still has the best tuning system and features for the money.
Basically if you cant tune it then you will be losing power BUT If you are on a budget then its an awesome option to get you on the water and you can always upgrade later if you want.
I have the pin outs for the VQ30 if anyone wants to do their own.
